Rail Industry
  • As Transfield Services’ Industry Development Manager - Rail, between 1997 and 2002, David was a key member of Transfield’s successful bid team for infrastructure maintenance contracts with Tranz Rail New Zealand (NZ$50m pa), Australia Southern Railroad for South Australian Freight Lines and BHP OneSteel, Whyalla ($12m pa),
    Australian Rail Track Corporation ($25m pa) and Yarra Trams Franchise
    ($82m pa) between 1997 and 2002, and acquisition of Australian National’s Infrastructure Services Maintenance Group in 1997.
  • Maintenance development and implementation of high profile Build Own Operate & Transfer (BOOT) Projects such as New Southern Railway (The Airport Line) Brisbane Airport Rail Link for Transfield between 1999 and 2001.
  • Managed Transfield’s Rail Safety Accreditation for operations in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Queensland.
  • Contract resurfacing for Fiji Sugar Corporation for Fessl Pty Ltd (1997).
  • Eraring Balloon Loop, near Newcastle for Ulan Coal on behalf of John Holland Pty Ltd (1992).
  • Various track upgrading projects between 1976 and 1991 (including NSW South Western Grain Lines as Assistant Division Engineer, Cootamundra, Trackwork Project Engineer for the Gosford to Newcastle Electrification Project, Project Engineer for the Thevenard Balloon Loop for Boral Australian Gypsum and NSW North Coast Tracklaying Project Manager for John Holland Constructions Pty Ltd).
  • Acting Division Engineer, Tamworth and Upgrading Engineer, Public Transport Commission at Newcastle (1979 – 1980).

Quarrying & Resources Industries

  • Commissioning Manager for 1000 TPH Blast Furnace Slag Plant at BHP Port Kembla for Australian Steel Mill Services (1990).
  • Upgrading of gypsum and salt rail unloading and ship loading facility at Ceduna, South Australia for Boral Australian Gypsum / Gypsum Resources Australia (1984).
  • Upgrading & quarry management of a 250 TPH hard rock granite quarry crushing and screening at Kota Bharu, Malaysia for BMI International Division (1982 to 1983).
  • Development, procurement and management of a portable 180 TPH sand and gravel crushing and screening plant for BMG (Country) at Muswellbrook in NSW (1981).

Road Industry

  • Slip Form Concrete Paving for the Sydney Gore Hill Freeway for John Holland Constructions (1991).
  • Pioneered the development of high strength nil-slump Roller Compacted Concrete Pavements in NSW, Victoria & South Australia for Boral Rollcrete (1988 - 1990).
  • Managed cementitious stabilised pavement construction for Boral Stabilex (1984 - 1988).

International Railway Track and Infrastructure Maintenance Technology Experience
  • In July 2001, David undertook a Rail Study Tour of Europe which included visiting the rail grinding operations of the Speno International associate companies in Venice, Italy of Abrasivi Speciali Industrali SPA and Mecnafer SPA and the tramway operations of Semitag (a Transdev Company) in Grenoble, France. The study tour included various rail operations in Italy, France, Spain and the Netherlands.
  • David was a Delegate and Guest International Forum Panel Speaker at the VDEI 23rd International Exhibition of Track Technology (iaf) in Münster, Germany between May 13 to May 15, 2003. Site visits included the rail maintenance manufacturing equipment facilities of Plasser and Theurer in Linz, Austria. The study tour included various rail operations in Germany, Austria and the Netherlands.
  • Attended the Rail Solutions Asia Conference in Taipei between May 12 to May 14, 2004 including site visits to the Taiwan High Speed Rail Project.
  • Rail study tour to Bangkok in January 2005 including visits to State Railway of Thailand, Bangkok Skytrain (BTS) and Bangkok Metro Underground System.
  • Delegate at the 8th International Heavy Haul Conference (IHHC) in Rio De Janiero, Brazil during June 2005 and for the Post-Conference Technical Tour to the Iron Ore Railroad Port of Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) in Vitoria, Espirito Santo, Brazil.
  • In January / February 2006, David undertook a rail study tour of South Africa and Zambia which included visits to the Spoornet OREX Heavy Heavy Iron Ore Line from Sishen to Saldanha, the Spoornet Bay Heavy Haul Coal Line from Witbank to Richards Bay and also the junction of the Zimbabwe and Zambian Railway Systems above Victoria Falls. In addition, David undertook visits to Spoornet field sites and manufacturing facilities with contractors and suppliers including Plasser Railway Machinery SA (Plasserail), Railway Mechanised Maintenance Company (Ramco), Lennings Rail Services and Pandrol SA.
  • David was a Delegate at the VDEI 24th International Exhibition of Track Technology (iaf) in Münster, Germany between May 30 to June 1, 2006. The study tour included various rail operations in Singapore, Italy, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, France, UK and Bangkok. Site visits included a site to railway construction works at St Pancras Station, London, as Contract 105 of the Channel Tunnel Crossing Rail Link Project, being undertaken by Costain Bachy O'Rourke Joint Venture, to construct a new rail terminal for the Eurostar trains arriving from France. Mowlem Rail (a Carillion plc Group company) are undertaking the rail works and three types of Pandrol resilient rail fastenings are being installed - FASTCLIP, VIPA and VANGUARD.
  • Rail study tour to Hong Kong, Vietnam and Bangkok in January 2008 including visits to MTR Hong Kong including the construction of the new West Rail Project at Kowloon West Station by the Link 200 Joint Venture (Leighton Asia, Balfour Beatty, Kumagai and John Holland), Vietnam National Railways in Hanoi, State Railway of Thailand and Bangkok Skytrain (BTS).
